Narcotics Security Box by V-Line Review
Today I met with Mary, a representative of the Dean Safe Co., Simi Valley.
She brought the V-Line Narcotics Security Box model 6912-SE with the integrated KABA Unicon CL20 smart lock. I took the opportunity to check out the chassis, kick the tires and slam the doors a few times. As safes go, its a good safe, well built and in the EMS application, it easily gives enough security (peace of mind) to prevent Joe-Public from utilizing a moment of opportunity to take our scheduled drugs.

The Kaba lock has 5 buttons on the face. First you press your prefix (3 digits) then your code (5 digits). The prefix can be used to ID the rank or shift for easier reconciliation and analysis during your audit. The 3 metal circles above and to the right of the 3 button is where the key fob connects to do the down load and programming. There are 3 lights between the numbers 2 and 3. They light up for locked, opened and low battery. After pressing your code, you hear the noise of the lock unlocking and you turn the handle to open the door.
There is a key over ride as well. The key over ride also triggers an event in the memory. The memory file is downloaded to the key fob in a locked, non editable file.
The package comes with a bracket. You’ll need to use this as the safe door swings down and needs the extra room.
The Safe sitting on top of the mounting bracket.
The inside dimensions are 12.5” wide x 5.75” high x 7” deep.
The door utilizes a un-dampened piano hinge.
This is the underside of the Kaba lock, loosening the 2 screws will give access to the batteries (2 CR-2 lithium)
On Amazon, the batteries range between $3.13 and $10.95 per 2 pack.
What does this thing cost?
The safe is $589 from Dean Safe.
You’ll want the software to download the events and that software package is $800.
That package comes with 2 key fobs (Teal colored-upload programming key fob and a Red colored -download audit key fob) and a USB interface cable for the key fobs. So, for $1389, you get the complete package and each additional smart safe is $589.
Doesn’t matter the size of your organization, you only need to purchase the software once.
What are its features?
Up to 125 codes with the ability to differentiate between user levels by unique prefixes. Five button electronic lock with codes that are 8 digit (including the prefix).
Single or dual user codes to open lock.
Audit trail tracks up to 400 events
3 minute lockout after 5 failed wrong codes.
Powered by lithium batteries
24 hour customer service by Kaba Mas
16 gauge steel
Made in the U.S.A.
Final Thoughts:
This is a good safe, it get’s the job done. There are applications where this will not work. If you need more than 125 users than this isn’t the solution for your agency. If you need instant or quick audit capability this may not work for you, as it is not WiFi enabled. Then again, that might be a good thing.
The safe is easy to open, press your 3 digit prefix followed immediately by your individual 5 digit pin code and you have instant access to the contents.
You’ll need to determine if the cost of this device is prohibitive or not. For an agency with 60 employees and 4 apparatus the cost of entry is about $3,156.00. I’m going to presume this agency already has a PC to install the software onto. There’s a lot of peace of mind in knowing that the candy is locked securely behind a smart event monitoring safe.
The smart, event-logging safe is one part of the total CS system needed to prevent employees and supervisors from stealing or tampering with an agency’s drug supply. While only one part of the total system, IMO this is one of the corner stones. Without the ability to know who, when, and how long people had access to the agency drugs, it becomes difficult to rule out who may have tampered with the drugs.
