CAMAS, Wash. The fire chief of the southwest Washington community of Camas has been terminated after six years.

Mayor Paul Dennis said Friday that he and City Administrator Lloyd Halverson spoke with Leo Leon and came to a mutual understanding.

Leon told the Columbian newspaper the decision was mutual "because I refused to retire or resign." He called the ouster "unjustified and unwarranted."

The city's former public works director, Monte Brachmann, will fill in on an interim basis.

The mayor tells the Oregonian that Leon was fired because he hadn't delivered suitable solutions for the city's budget crisis. Declining property values have left the city with less funding for emergency services.
