FROM STAFF REPORTS

RALEIGH -- A Wake County paramedic faces a felony embezzlement charge after Raleigh police said he stole and injected two syringes of morphine.

Police arrested Jordan Coates, 25, of 208 East Holt St., Smithfield, on Saturday. Their report said the theft happened between Friday and Saturday.

Wake County EMS Chief Skip Kirkwood said Coates has been suspended pending further investigation. Kirkwood said he could not provide specifics as to what happened because it is a personnel matter.

North Carolina's personnel law generally prevents the release of information pertaining to public employee misconduct.

"It's just unfortunate when something like this occurs, but we do our best to respond to it quickly," Kirkwood said.

Coates, who has no prior history of criminal behavior, was released on $3,000 unsecured bond. He is to appear in court Monday.
